Houston Kitchen Remodeling Tips - Storing Dishes and Glass | Homeowner's Guide
Most custom cabinets in Houston kitchens today hold their age well. However, it can be time for a change. Our kitchen remodelers are experts at molding installation and repairs, regardless of age of the wood trim. How you choose to store your dishes, glass and cutlery depends on how you like your kitchen. If you favor minimalism, then everything will need to be stowed behind closed doors, but if you prefer a more lived-in look and enjoy having your possessions on display, there is great decorative potential in open storage. Whatever you choose, keep your tableware well ordered so that if is easy to find what you need, and don't hold on to things that are damaged or that you no longer use.
Dishes: Store plates, bowls and cups separately if you can, and don't stack them too high if you want to avoid breakages. Open storage can work well: a uniform collection of white chined lines up on a custom kitchen cabinet will look smart and graphic. If you have a Welsh cabinet or long shelf, consider displaying an assortment of different plates, and fix hooks to the shelf edge to accommodate cups and mugs. Alternatively, allot one cabinet in the kitchen for all your dishes and keep the things you use most frequently at the front.
Cutlery: An assortment of different cutlery can make a mess of any kitchen cabinet. Sort it by type, and use the drawer dividers to establish order. Top-of-the-line custom kitchens offer special drawers for cooking knives but a wall-mounted magnetic strip or block on the countertop works just as well.
Glassware: The most breakable of all, glass should be stored carefully. Keep it at eye level in a cabinet if possible and make it easy to access. Also, be prepared to wash dust off before use. Glass on glass can make a brilliant see-through display, so consider erecting glass shelves for your tumblers, stemware and bowels. Everyday glass should be kept close at hand: party glasses can be stored separately at the back of a custom cabinet or on a high shelf in the kitchen.
More Safety Tips
It is especially important that cupboards and cabinets with household cleaners, alcohol, bug sprays, garden chemicals, or petfood be closed and locked securely. Be sure that garbage cans are securely closed in that contents cannot be reached. Better still, make sure that anything that might prove hazardous or toxic to children is kept well out of reach.
Never leave the handle of a boiling pot or a kennel protruding over the edge of the stovetop. It can too easily be knocked or pulled off, spilling it's hot contents. When cooking with hot oil, be sure that children are not nearby. Follow safety directions for deep frying diligently.
